Our mission is
to create development and innovation in the area of management of museums and public collections in Poland.
Our Mission Is Realized by way of:
• examining and initiating of legislative solutions,
• granting support to museum institutions in all spheres of their activity,
• creation of modern scientific, management and educational programs
• gathering and popularization of knowledge,
• building and updating of the integrated system of information about museums and collections.
How and for Whom We Act
Our goal is to create a modern and competent cultural institution with an open philosophy of activity, encouraging the cooperation of both the circles professionally connected with museology and all those who support the building of a modern museology in Poland. We wish to become a forum for exchange of thoughts and experience of museum workers, but also representatives of the world of science, art, business who, just like us, perceive museums as institutions representing a huge potential of creativity and influence on social transformations.
Areas of the Institute’s Activity
Legislation
We shall examine and analyze the legal solutions functioning in the scope of organization of museology and protection of collections in Poland. Their measurable effect will be the final report containing proposals for amendment of, inter alia, the act on museums with a view to modernize and improve their functioning.
Research and strategic activities.
The Institute will undertake an intensive activity aiming at carrying out an analysis of the current status of the museology. That will result in creation of a periodical report about the status of museums in Poland and a Strategy of Development of Museology, taking into account the particular categories of museums in Poland, in particular: newly built, martyrdom, historical, heritage parks, as well as the relations in which the museums function (internal, social, organizational). Our objective will be to support the research concerning the provenience of museum collections. A team of experts will be established to prepare a questionnaire and a report defining the standards of safekeeping of museum pieces; preparation of state of preservation evaluation standards; preparation of program of conservatory documentation; a handbook of so called good practices. An important task of the Institute will also be a development of standards concerning the digitalization of museum collections.
Legal Advice
Our Institute will be the proper address for all those needing to determine the current status of legislation in the scope of museology and protection of collections. We shall analyze, offer interpretations and provide advice to persons and institutions in the area of the law.
Education
Education is a very important element of our activity. The Institute will prepare and carry out its own educational projects and co-operate in that respect with other institutions, such as the Institute of Museology of USKW, realizing training cycles, the Modern Art. Museum, co-organizing the “New Museums” conference, carrying out training courses within the framework of the “Modern Museum” project. The activities will aim at raising of competence level and knowledge in all areas of management of museums.
Publishing
While realizing its mission, the Institute will carry out a publishing activity by way of issuing ”Almanach muzeów polskich” [“Almanac of Polish Museums”], (this will inaugurate its own publishing series), “Cenne, bezcenne, utracone" [“Valuable, Priceless, Lost”] and „Muzealnictwo” [“Museology”]. A co-operation will be established with ”Bellona” publishers with a view to prepare a special edition of the monthly ”Mówią Wieki” [“Spoken by Centuries”] devoted to museums. We shall also act as a co-organizer of the Museum Book Showroom in the framework of the annual Historical Book Fair.
Data Bases
The Institute’s website will provide everyone with an easy access to constantly updated data bases dedicated to museums and public collections.
Programs of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage
One of the Institute’s tasks will be the organizational and financial management of programs entrusted to it by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, such as ”Supporting of Museum Activities” or ”Museum Management Academy” in co-operation with the Palace-Museum in Wilanów.
Promotion
We intend to use modern communication and identification tools which are to help promote the idea of modern museology in Poland, facilitate access to an always-up-to-date information about important events in the life of museums. One of the important tasks to promote the achievements of the Polish museology will be ”Sybilla” – Museum Event of the Year” run by the Institute.
